چکیده

Background: The baseline levels of serum procalcitonin (PCT) have not been determined in patients with end-stage renal disease needing renal replacement therapy. The purpose of the present study is to verify the reference range of PCT and parameters affecting its value in patients receiving chronic hemodialysis. Methods: A total of 125 dialytic patients who had no obvious clinical signs of systemic infection were included in this prospective observational study. The PCT level was measured, and its relationships to other clinical and laboratory parameters were evaluated. Results: The baseline PCT levels of 82 male and 43 female patients were evaluated. Mean baseline PCT level was 0.24 ± 0.22 ng/ml. Sixteen (12.8 %) patients showed elevated PCT (>0.3 ng/ml) and C-reactive protein (CRP) (>0.3 mg/dl), and 11 (8.8 %) patients showed only abnormal PCT. In 9 patients (7.2 %), PCT levels exceeded 0.5 ng/ml, which is a common cutoff point for sepsis although they had no clinical signs of systemic bacterial infection. The PCT level was statistically correlated with the duration of chronic dialysis, urine volume per day, dialysis time, the serum CRP, β2-microglobulin levels, and normalized dialysis dose. Conclusions: Most dialysis patients had PCT levels within the reference range of non-dialytic individuals. However, a not negligible number of patients had higher PCT levels than the upper limit of healthy individuals, despite there being no sign of infection. Impairment of renal function and hemodialytic status may affect PCT level.

اندازه گیری سطح سرمی پروکلسی‌تونین در بیماران مشکوک به آنفولانزای خوکی (H1N1)

Abstract Background: Measurement of serum level of procalcitonin in patients with H1N1 influenza could decrease the consumption of unnecessary antibiotics. This study aimed to determine the serum levels of procalcitonin in patients with swine flu (H1N1) in the Hajar Hospital of Shahrekord in 2011. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study patients presenting with clinical manifestati...

Comparing Serum Procalcitonin Levels Between Patients with Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Patients with Acute Exacerbation of Asthma

Background and purpose: Serum procalcitonin (PCT) indicates a bacterial infection that can reduce the administration of antibiotics. The aim of this study was to compare serum procalcitonin levels in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma and its relationship with lung function and inflammatory factors. Materials and methods: In this cross-s...

Can serum procalcitonin measurement help monitor the treatment of acute bacterial meningitis? A prospective study

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated the value of serum procalcitonin (PCT) as a marker of bacterial infection, as well as the rapid decrease in its concentration with appropriate antibiotic treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the variation in serum PCT levels over time during the treatment of acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) in adults. Methods: In this prospective analy...

بررسی ارتباط بین میزان پروکلسیتونین سرم و ابتلا به عفونتها

Background and Aim: Procalcitonin is prohormone of calcitonin and is made 116 amino acids. The normal value of procalcitonin is less than 0.5 ng/ml, that if this amount exceeds, infection is indicated. This poly-peptide is a marker for the diagnosis of primary infection. Increased amounts of procalcitonin is associated with infection especially bacterial infections. Materials and Methods: 32 ...

Utility of serum procalcitonin values in patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a cautionary note

BACKGROUND Serum procalcitonin levels have been used as a biomarker of invasive bacterial infection and recently have been advocated to guide antibiotic therapy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, rigorous studies correlating procalcitonin levels with microbiologic data are lacking. Acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) have been linked to viral and bacterial ...
